Why I Wrote This Book: Sow Your Seed

There are times when challenges and the battles we face in our lives causes us to question everything we believe.  Many times, we have questions but no answers, and sometimes we have the answers but we can’t accept them. I found myself in this period which lasted from the summer of 2015 until the end of 2016. It was a period in my life when I had many questions but only a  few answers. I had just concluded my bachelor’s degree and a few months later, I got the news that my beloved mother was diagnosed with renal failure. While still deliberating on how to chart the course of my life forward, the thought that my beloved mother was going through suffering lingered. This was the beginning of a long spirited battle to keep her alive. The questions of our humanity, our frail and fragile flesh, our journey here, our end, and our lives after we leave this world became more pronounced in my search for a solution to my mother’s failing health. It was in this search that the book Sow Your Seed was born.

The message from the parable of the sower in Mark 4:1-9 is about the kingdom of God, the word of God, and salvation. One of the reasons Jesus used parables to teach in scripture was to make his message relevant, practical, and relatable. The central message of the book is developed from Mark 4:1-9. This is not an attempt to rewrite the message of Jesus Christ from the parable. Rather, like every other message from the Scriptures, the lessons from the parable can be applied to our lives in various dimensions. In some sense, this parable became relatable and practical in answering some of my questions. I will be the first to admit that I did not initially set out turn the lessons so learned into a book, but as I wrote down these few lessons, I came to believe that they were not meant for me alone but for as many as I could possibly share them with, especially young adults who are battling everything life is throwing at them. I began to see how our lives could be likened to a seed as we journey through the earth. It was the message I did not know I needed.

Some of us live our lives as if we own it. We live as though we can extend our life span by a second with our will and strength. We tend to forget that as much as we live, we are subject to God who brought us into this world and our days are determined by Him. In this book, I take a look at questions such as “Who am I?” And “Why am I here?”. Your answers or understanding of these questions will dictate how you see your life and will inform your decisions for the most part of your life. Ruminating on my mother’s life in light of this message gave me a better sense of peace and joy in spite of the painful loss and it further spurred me into answering the questions about my life and existence. She played her role in my life to the best of her ability. We all have divinely assigned roles to play in the lives of others. For this reason, in Chapter 2 of the book, I talk about women from the scriptures who were pivotal in the life journey of Moses.

At the foundation of every blossoming tree is its root. At the core of our life is our root — God. We originate from God, and how we live our lives should be rooted in Him. We can’t live a life of meaningful harvest outside God. In Chapter 5 of this book, I share the lessons we can learn from Isaac who stayed rooted in God and obeyed His instruction despite the unfavorable economic situation. We stay rooted in God by obeying His instructions to us even when it doesn’t make sense to obey. It was a pragmatic action or decision to leave a barren land, but God insisted that Isaac remained in the barren land — an instruction that did not make sense. This encapsulates the essence of trust and obedience to God as I write in the book that “our obedience to God is truly tested when there is an opportunity to disobey God or when it doesn’t make sense to the human mind to obey God”.

God has equipped us with everything we need to meet our needs and the needs of others. But more importantly, how we live our lives or “Sow Our Seeds”, should bring Glory to God and draw more men unto Him. These are some of the lessons that helped me which I share in the book, especially for young adults. I trust God that this book will give you an insight into how to cultivate your life’s journey for Harvest and to live a life that brings glory to God.
